Why Microsuction is Better than Ear Syringing
Ear syringing (also called ear irrigation) uses water to flush wax from the ear canal. While widely used on the NHS, it carries risks: it can push wax deeper, cause dizziness, and is not suitable for people with perforated eardrums, ear infections, or previous ear surgery.
Microsuction is widely regarded as the gold standard for ear wax removal. It uses a fine, low-pressure suction probe under direct visual guidance — meaning the practitioner can see exactly what they’re doing at all times. There is no water involved, so there’s no risk of getting the ear wet, and it’s suitable for virtually all patients including those with perforated eardrums.
At Hear Now!, we only ever use microsuction — we believe it is the safest and most effective method available.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — our pricing covers both ears in a single visit. We’ll examine both ears and remove wax from whichever needs treatment.
Absolutely. Many of our Wollaston clients are elderly, housebound, or find it difficult to travel to clinics. Our mobile service was designed with these patients in mind — we come to you, at a time that suits you.
Our HD digital otoscopy allows us to examine the ear canal and eardrum in detail. If we find no wax but notice something else of concern, we’ll advise you and, if appropriate, recommend you speak to your GP or an audiologist.
We recommend using olive oil ear drops for 3–5 days before your appointment to soften the wax — this helps make removal quicker and more comfortable. Spray or drops are available from most pharmacies.
Most appointments take between 30 and 45 minutes, including the hearing check and otoscopy. We’ll let you know if we expect it to take longer.
Microsuction is generally painless. Some people experience a mild sensation of pressure or a brief noise, but the procedure should not cause pain. We use the lowest suction necessary to remove the wax gently and safely.
